Following the advice of his teacher HAP Grieshaber, Stöhrer visited the exhibition "Neue amerikanische Malerei" (New American Painting) at the Berlin University of Visual Arts in 1958 and saw works by Pollock and De Kooning for the first time. In 1960/61 he was intensively occupied with the "Psychoanalytic Drawings" by Jackson Pollock, which were accessible for him through an American edition fo the drawings. He was in a deep intellectual exchange with friends about the expressive style of Soutine, Bacon and de Kooning. With a remarkable consistency Stöhrer worked up his own both expressive and abstract pictorial language, which, as it is the case with this work, captivates the observer with its tremenduously wild power.
