This work comes from a very special cycle of works in which Gottlieb experimented with archetypical abstractions and symbols. The signs in the pictographs call reminiscence of Indian and African art, however, they were conceived by the artist as part of his permanent quest for a "collective unconscious". "The pictures change with the times. Today our expectations are reduced to the desperate attempt to escape evil, the world around us seems to fall apart, accordingly, our obsessive ideas are just expressions of our neuroses that we take for our reality. In my opinion so-called abstractions are not abstract at all. On contrary, they are the Realism of our days." (Adolph Gottlieb).
