Fritz Winter's oeuvre is characterized by a sequence of different well-defined creative periods. Structurally similar works are the result of each period. "Im Rot" is part of a period that draws on previous principles of creation by bringing structures that used to be in the background to the fore. As of 1960 "a colorful diversity of rectangles next to and on top of one another appears. They provide a dense and complete referential system." (Quote after: Gabriele Lohberg, Fritz Winter. Leben und Werk, Munich 1986, p. 88).
