Sam Francis: The Relationship of Drawings, Annotated Unique Proofs and Prints from The Edge & Fresh Air Period, 3rd October - 14 November 1998.

The highly interesting conceptual period of the "Edge Paintings" was in the second half of the 1960s. Sam Francis turned to a clearly structured and reduced usage of form and color. In general, his choice of colors delivered proof of his rediscovered preference for intensive colors that he pushes to the sheet's border areas. "The gaudy colors and harsh contrasts are balanced out by the white which serves as a 'neutral ground' allowing the observer excursions into realms of colors and contrasts and serving as a safe harbor for an 'optical retreat' at any time." (Andreas Denk, in: kunstforum vol. 122, 1993, exhibitions: Bonn, p. 407)
