In 1921 George Grosz and his publisher Wieland Herzfelde were sentenced by a court for insult of the German Forces. The same year E. Reiss in Berlin published "Die Abenteuer des Herrn Tartarin aus Tarascon" by Alphonse Daudet (Jentsch BA I,1-20) with illustrations by George Grosz. They count among his most successful illustrations. This sheet is a preliminary drawing for the motif "Hoch Tatarin", its printed version is even more rich in detail. Our sheet shows the main protagonists of the book's final scene.
