"Motifs from Ulm and the surroundings became common in Paul Kleinschmidt's work since the Ulm factory owners and art collectors Martin and Wilhelm Bilger had becaoe his patrons. Ulm, where he had relocated to from Berlin in 1932, was the starting point of his odyssey through Europe for political reasons."
Dr. Ingrid von der Dollen, Förderkreis Expressiver Realismus, Bad Honnef

Kleinschmidt spent the months July and August in 1933 in Ulm. Based on the scores of sketches he made there, Kleinschmidt executed a painting with the view of the nave of the church and one showing the main portal. This picture of an underground crossing from an unusual perspective is also based on these sketches. Bridges and underways were considered symbols of the new technological era. The French impressionists had already adopted them as themes for their paintings. Developed further by the expressionists in their cityscapes, the theme played an important role through New Objectivity all the way into the thirties. Kleinschmidt may have been well-aware thereof, so that he felt inspired to this work. His pastose style mitigates the subject‘s technical aspect. [KD]
