"My friends the apples, which I love for their charming red, yellow, purple and green dress, are, on the one or the other background, no longer just apples to me. Their tones, their bright colors on a more sober background melt to form a harmony laced with dissonance. To my eye they sound like a music that reflects my moods [..] Apples, trees, faces - to me they are just signs of seeing something else in them: The color's life, captured by someone passionate, by someone in love."
Alexej von Jawlensky, letter from 1905, quote after: Clemens Weiler, Köpfe Gesichte, Meditationen, Hanau 1970, p. 121.
