• Exceptional composition from the mature years in Paris. • Kolle died a year after this painting was made at the age of 31 in Chantilly near Paris, leaving behind a high-quality pictorial oeuvre. • Featured in the grand Kolle exhibition at the Lenbachhaus in Munich (1994/95). • Kolle's figure pictures with toreros, soldiers and sailors are characterized by a smooth transition to the self-portrait. • A self-portrait with red pochette from around the same time is in the collection of the Städel Museums, Frankfurt a. M.
