• Works from this time in Italy have hardly been documented through publications and exhibitions and just wait to be discovered.

On March 29, 1911, Pechstein married Charlotte Kaprolat in Berlin. A few days later, the young couple left to spent their honeymoon in Italy for a month. Towards the end of their trip they spent more than a week in Rome, before returning to Berlin via Munich. The impressions of the first trip through Italy in 1907 already encouraged Pechstein to "pursue simplicity, generosity combined with beautiful color." To date hardly any works from the second trip are known in exhibitions and publications. In terms of color and line this watercolor in particular conveys the very spirited, generous lightness to which the young artist felt inspired by the southern landscape. [KT]
