For Rudolf Schlichter his wife 'Speedy' was one of the most important motives. Schlichter met this femme fatale in 1927 and married her in 1929. George Grosz was the best man at their wedding. Rudolf Schlichter portrayed Speedy in erotic drawings and paintings over and over again. She helped him to portray all facets of the feminine and his own longings and masochistic desires. Schlichter was a great portraitist in the 1920s, daring to show his stormy lover Speedy in various roles. In the eventful years between the wars, Speedy offered Rudolf Schlichter support and comfort . Surprisingly, he turned to Catholicism in the late 1920s. This watercolor, which presumably shows his wife in Maria's typical robe with a blue scarf covering her head and a red robe, was created during this phase. It is an image of an idealized love that probably did not correspond to the actual circumstances of their complex relationship. [EH]
