Growing up at the foothills of the Bavarian Alps, Carl Reiser felt a deep fascination for the natural world. After deciding to pursue a career as a painter, he set out for France in 1898 to study for two years at the famous “Académie Julian”. He went on to attend the nature and landscape class at the Munich Academy and started exploring the color theories of the Impressionists despite the rigid academic program he had to follow. In 1892, Reiser had his first successful exhibition at the Munich Secession before becoming a contributor to the magazine “Jugend” (Youth). Starting in 1905, he gradually acquired his characteristic painting style, embracing broad, impasto brushstrokes and deriving his expression from vibrant colors and bold brushwork. His mountain landscapes, which were to become his favorite motifs, met with great success at an exhibition in Munich’s Glaspalast in 1906. Aside from snow-covered winter landscapes, he also created a small number of flower paintings, capturing the full essence of summer and the colors of the often humble but vibrant blossoms he chose as models.
