• Hartung's “Liegende” (Reclining Figures) are arguably the artist's most famous work group.
• The appeal of contrasts: exaggerated, sensual physicality meets abstract formal language.
• The essence of humanity – Hartung translates the classic motif of the “reclining nude” into his unique modern aesthetics.
• The anthropomorphic nudes are among his most sought-after works on the international auction market.
• Part of a German private collection for 35 years.
• The large version of this figure (1951, CR no. 472) fetched the highest auction results for a work by the artist to date (2022 and 2025).
• Two copies of the monumental version are on display at Gottorf Castle, Schleswig-Holstein State Museums, Schleswig, and in the sculpture park of the Woods Art Institute, Wentorf.
