First in watercolors, then also on canvas, Graubner experiments with forms of color application that give priority to the multiple layers of paint over the limiting form of the picture edges. In order to enhance the spatial effect of the color surfaces, Graubner began in the early 1960s to mount picture-sized color pads into the picture itself and later also to cover them with Perlon fabric. By first soaking and painting the fabric cushions with several layers of diluted acrylic paint, Graubner creates a fluctuating, breathing condensation similar to a body of color, which is intensified in the sagging cushion paintings—as in the present case—to a color space that reaches out to the viewer like a belly. Graubner's "cushion pictures" were first exhibited by the Düsseldorf gallery owner Alfred Schmela and ultimately earned the artist a teaching position at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg in 1965, where he held a professorship in painting from 1969 onwards. With his "cushion paintings," which form a unique and fascinating body of work within Graubner's oeuvre and are considered the artist's most innovative creations, Graubner was also represented for the first time at documenta 4 in Kassel in 1968.
