Eine von sieben Varianten dieser Skulptur, die sich nur in Details voneinander unterscheiden und daher jeweils als Unikat anzusehen sind.

"1934 sah Manzù den amtierenden Papst Pius XI. im Petersdom zwischen zwei Kardinälen sitzen. Seitdem […] hat ihn das Thema 'Kardinal' fasziniert. 1938 entstand der erste Kardinal in Bronze, der sich heute in der Galleria nazionale d'arte moderna, Rom, befindet. Ab 1949 gehörte das Thema fest zu seinem Repertoire. 1956 trat er mit seinen Kardinälen erstmals auf der Biennale in Venedig auf. Annähernd dreihundert Werke Manzùs sind dieser Figur gewidmet. Mehr und mehr hat er sie schematisch, in einer dreieckig pyramidalen Form gestaltet, manchmal dynamisch gebogen, manchmal statisch gesetzt, bis sie schliesslich wie ausgehöhlt erschien. Kopf und Mitra des Würdenträgers bekrönen sein Pluviale. Das heilige Ornat, der vorn offene Kardinalsmantel, hat sich bei Manzù um 1950 in einen geometrischen 'Topos' verwandelt, der seitdem immer und immer wieder variiert wird. […] Die Kardinäle sehen dabei nahezu leutselig aus […] [und stehen] nicht erhaben, sondern einfach, ja manchmal komisch da. In ihren Gesichtern, die häuftig pausbäckig und stupsnäsig ausfallen, erkennt man anstelle der hoheitlichen vor allem freundliche, kameradschaftliche Züge.“ (Thomas Kellein, in: Giacomo Manzù.
