Brant, S., Stultifera Navis, qua omnium mortalium narratur stultitia ... The Ship of Fooles, wherin is shewed the folly of all States, with divers other workes adioyned unto the same ... Translated out of Latin into Englishe by Alexander Barclay. 3 Tle. in 1 Bd.
- Leder-Exlibris J. P. R. Lyell. The second English edition of Brant's famous "Narrenschiff", translated by Alexander Barclay and with the Latin version of Jacob Locher. First printed by R. Pynson in 1509. The Cawood edition at hand adds "The mirrour of good Maners" of Domenicus Mancinus and Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini's "Eglogues", both translated by Barclay. With large woodcut on title and 116 woodcuts in text, from the same blocks that were used in the edition by Pynson, who copied his illustrations from those accompanying Pierre Rivière's French translation, printed in Paris 1497. These Parisian cuts in turn are based on those of the original German edition, of which many are ascribed to Albrecht Dürer. "Illustrations of great interest, the varieties of perennial human folly being portrayed with much humour, and introducing amongst other things representations of trades and occupations of the period." (Fairfax Murray, French books 66) - Gothic, Roman and Italic types. Bound in dark blue morocco by Francis Bedford, with richly gilt spine, gilt fillets, inside gilt border and gilt edges. - First 5 leaves with small backed corner damage, 1 leaf cropped close at foot and new inserted, 3 leaves at end skilfully remargined. Edges in few places slightly rubbed. Fine copy. - Bookplate J. P. R. Lyell.
