Frühe Ausgabe des spätmittelalterlichen Bestsellers. Das nach der Bibel wohl am weitesten verbreitete Buch des Christentums.

Zainer druckte im gleichen Jahr noch eine zweite Variante mit seiner Verlagsangabe. "Wie in vielen frühen Ausgaben wird die Imitatio Christi auch in Zainers Drucken dem Pariser Theologen Johannes Gerson zugeschrieben, von dem jedoch nur die beigedruckte Schrift stammt." (Amelung 57)

EINBAND: Zeitgenössischer Schweinslederband über Holzdeckeln auf 3 Bünden mit Blind- und Rollenprägung sowie Messingschließe. 8vo. 14,5 : 9 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit zahlreichen eingemalten Lombarden in Rot. - KOLLATION: 8 nn. Bll. (d. l. w.), 182 num. Bll. (ohne die beiden l. w.). Gotische Type, durchgehend rubriziert, 22 Zeilen und Kolumnentitel. - ZUSTAND: Tlw. schwach wasserrandig, Titel ausgeschnitten und alt montiert, Bl. 2 mit erg. Randabriß (gering Textverlust); letztes Bl. vo. mit Eintragung von alter Hand. Einbd. gering fleckig, 1 Schließe unvollständig. Insgesamt schönes, wohlerhaltenes Exemplar. - PROVENIENZ: Exemplar aus der Bibliotheca Philosopica Hermetica von J. Ritman, mit dessen Exlibris auf dem Innendeckel.

Early edition, one of two variants produced by Zainer in the same year (this copy without his name in the colophon). With numerous painted initials in red. 8vo. 190 leaves (lacking the last 2 blank). Gothic type, rubricated throughout. 22 lines and headline. Contemp. pigskin over wooden boards with rollstamped border and flower stamps; brass clasps. - Title cut out and mounted, fol. 2 with rebacked marginal defect (little loss of text). Partly minor waterstaining. Binding slightly stained, 1 clasp defect. Overall nice and well preserved copy from the Ritman collection, bookplate 'Philosophia Hermetica'.(R)
