Brücke bei Murnau. 1912-17.
Oil on canvas.
Signed lower right. With title and inscription as well as with the worknumber "164" on the stretcher. 58,5 : 87,5 cm (23 : 34,4 in). Völcker, who was born in Pomerania as the son of a pastor, showed a talent for drawing and painting at an early age. He attended art school and the Academy in Berlin, ultimately studying in Professor’s master studio. In 1894 Völcker moved to Munich, took study trips to Italy and travelled in South Africa. He moved to Wiesbaden in 1899 for health reasons. From about 1912 his original Impressionist style changed to a moderate form of Expressionism. Völcker’s Upper Bavarian landscapes are especially remarkable as symphonies of colour reminiscent of southern lands. Sparing use of forms makes the colours appear all the more vivid. Völcker also made a name for himself in Wiesbaden public life as director of the Paintings Gallery and chairman of the Nassau Art Association. He painted murals for the South Cemetery and a figurative frieze in the Kaiser-Friedrich Swimming Baths. [BR]

Good overall impression. Smaller retouchings lower left and on the margins. Minor rubbing along the edges due to the framing.
