In 1991, the Chinese artist Cai Jin discovered the diversity of forms and the sensuous delights of flaccid banana leaves and made them the main theme in her work. She provides a broad field for associations in monumental formats, working in a style that is semi-abstract and features a smouldering palette. In 1993 Cai Jin was one of two female artists from China represented at the groundbreaking international exhibition “China's New Art, Post-1989”. She teaches at Tianjin Art Academy but has also been living in New York since 1998. [NB]
