Raffael. - [Loggie di Rafaele nel Vaticano ... Prima parte]. Part I (of 3). Series of 28 copper plates (of 31) with 14 illustrations of loggias. [Rome, M. Pagliarini 1772ff.]. Loose plates, untrimmed. Large folio (size of plates 55, 5 : 42,5 cm, size of sheets 79 : 56 cm).
Kat. Ornamentstich-Slg. Bln. 4068. - UCBA II, 1689. - Brunet IV, 1110. - Thieme/B. XXVI, 86 (Ottaviani). - Splendid large copper plates, engraved after wall decorations in loggias of the Vatican that were made by the famous Raffael. This is the almost complete first part of the gallery work that was published in three parts between 1772 and 1776, engraved by G. Valpato (1733-1803) and G. Ottaviani (around 1735-1808) after drafts by P. Camporesi et al. The illustrations show lavishly made pilasters, rich in details and panels with floral, figurative and architectural motifs. Each printed from two plates, however, not mounted plates (numbered from I to XIV) in excellent impressions on broad-margined untrimmed laid paper. - Lacking engr. title, plates A and B with illustrations of doors and 1 engr. overview with outline as well as 1 l. foreword. - Mostly with small marginal splits, originating from the format and with slight crease marks in places, 2 plates with longer tears, margins slightly shop-soiled in places, 2 plates affected stronger, 2 plates slightly stained in the margin, 1 plate with isolated small brown stains in the plate, 1 plate with squeeze mark. All in all a rare collection of very well-preserved, clean and broad-margined coppers on firm paper.
Set of 14 illustrations (of 17), printed on 28 plates (of 31), forming the first part (of 3) of the collection of engravings by G. Volpato and G. Ottaviani after the famous paintings by Raphael in the loggias at the Vatican. In loose sheets. - Lacking the engr. title, plate A and B, 1 engr. plan and 1 leaf with printed foreword. Condition: With mostly small tears and creases to margins, owing to the size of plates, 2 plates with tears into the platemark, margins partly slightly dusty (2 plates stronger affected), 2 plates slightly stained in margins, 1 plate with few small brown stains to illustration, 1 plate with printer's crease. Overall a rare and well-preserved collection, printed on clean, strong laid paper with wide margins.
