"Editiones principes of these two works, which remained the standard text for about a century" (Schreiber). - Prachtvolle Drucke, in denen erstmals die berühmten Grecs du Roi zur Verwendung kamen. Die Typen waren auf Veranlassung von Franz I. von Claude Garamond für Estienne geschnitten worden, nachdem der Kreter Angelos Vergetios, welcher zu dieser Zeit griechische Handschriften in der königlichen Bibliothek transkribierte, die Buchstaben entworfen hatte. "Die mit ca. 400 Buchstabenverbindungen durchsetzten Typen haben fast 250 Jahre den griechischen Buchdruck in Europa beherrscht" (LGB III, 247).

This first edition of the works of Saint Justin .. was a most important contribution to the study of Christian antiquity, and the sensation which its publication created among the learned was still remembered by Henri Estienne over 40 years later, in the preface to his own edition of Pseudo-Justin's Letter to Diognetus (1592)" (Schreiber).
Zustand für beide Werke: Erste und letzte Bll. tls. gering fleckig und mit kl. Wasserrändern, Titel von II mit durchgestr. alten Besitzeintrag, Innengelenke angebrochen (die betr. Lage gelockert, 1 Bl. gelöst, 1 Bl. mit kl. Einriß im Bund). Einbd. etw. beschabt und bestoßen, Rücken unter Verwendung des alten Materials restauriert sowie mit kl. Läsuren am ob. Ende, Schließen entfernt. Sonst gutes, innen sauberes und breitrandiges Exemplar.

With 3 woodcut printer's devices (1 rep.) and some fine woodcut initials and headpieces. - II: First collected edition. With woodcut printer's device and some fine woodcut initials and headpieces. - Contemp. rollstamped calf over wooden boards. - First and last leaves slightly soiled in places and minor with waterstains, title of II with early crossed out inscription. Inner hinges loosened (1 leaf of the last quire detached, 1 leaf with small tear in gutter). Binding somewhat rubbed and bumped, spine restored using the old material, upper spine end chipped, clasps removed. Else good copy, inside mostly clean and with wide margins.
