(2 Abb.). - Einzige italienische Ausgabe des 15. Jhs. und die erste illustrierte . Prachtvoller, reich illustrierter italienischer Frühdruck. "The most attractive of all the Ferrarese illustrations are contained in the Epistles of St. Jerome, printed by Laurentius de Rubeis .. Their author is evidently inspired by the 'popular' designer at Venice, in particular by the cuts in his Vitas Patrum of 1491 and Legenda Aurea of 1494. They are small column cuts of similar form and dimensions, and in the same outline style .. The artist is a most conscious humorist in the wonderful variety of facial expression he gives to St. Jerome's lion, offering its naive comment on the vaious episodes of the saint's life. As illustrations of contemporary custom, the woodcuts in the last section of the book, dealing with the rules of monastic life, are peculiarly interesting" (Hind).
Vord. Innengelenk gelockert, erste Lage gelöst.

Only Italian edition in 15th century, and the first illustrated. Magnificient printing with 2 large fig. woodcut borders, 2 fullpage woodcuts in text, 162 small woodcuts in text and numerous white-on-black woodcut initials as well as fine white-on-black woodcut printer's device at end. Mod. half calf over wooden boards, covering on boards using early blindstamped material. 270 (of 274) leaves. Lacking the first quire with the Vita and 1 woodcut border. - Outer margins partly waterstained, slight foxing in places, here and there browning, 2 leaves with backed tear, title (woodcut verso) remargined, first text leaf and ca. last 12 leaves with mended marginal defects. Front inner hinge loosened, quire at beginning detached.
