Schröder VII, 3982. - Schroeder, Hamburgs liebe Denkmale pp. 127ff. -Thieme/B. XXXII, 279. - Unusually comprehensive series of the renowned views of Hamburg and Old Hamburg by Suhr, rarely found in a bound copy such as this. All in all a fine piece of Hamburg culture , "interesting both in terms of cultural history and topography" (Th./B.). Does not only comprise almost all plates from both parts of Hamburg's Vergangenheit (according to table of content, just 4 plates of 81 lacking in part II), additionally with 13 plates from the so-called part III, which was published by Suhr under the separate title 'Ansichten von Hamburg und der Umgegend', in contrast to the first two parts it does not show the historic but the present face of the city (last three views in vol. II partly lithographed after P. Suhr, however, they are not part of the series). - The fine views in old coloring with numerous views of the city and its surroundings, among them famous views such as the Old and New Jungfernstieg, Alster, Lombardsbridge, St. Jakobi, St. Petri, St. Katharinen, Cathedral, Dammtor, Millerntor, Old Stock Exchange, Rödingsmarkt, views of the large fire in 1842, Esplanade, English church, hospital St. Georg, river Elbe in winter, view from Süllberg as well as the rare plate with view from the Elbhöhe onto St. Pauli and Altona. - Foxed in places, 2 plates with waterstains, 27 plates trimmed to image and mounted, ca. 10 plates with partly rebacked marginal splits (1 plate with affected image). Bindings scraped, 1 spine partly loosened and with blemish at bottom.

Rare collection of the famous Hamburg views by Suhr. Almost complete copy with 2 lithogr. titlepages and 93 col. lithographs, 4 lithogr. plans, 1 lithogr. remembrance plate. Contemp. calf with gilt title on front boards. - Parly foxed, 2 plates waterstained, 27 plats trimmed to the margins and laid down, about 10 plates with marginal tears which are partly rebacked (1 plate affected well into the illustration). Binding scraped, 1 spine parly detached and missing a small section.
