Bildnis Herwarth Walden. 1926.
Woodcut.
Lehmann 67. Signed, dated, titled and inscribed "Holzschnitt". On light wove paper. 18,8 x 15,9 cm (7,4 x 6,2 in). 42,5 x 29,5 cm (16,7 x 11,6 in).

The painter and graphic artist Edmund Kesting studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden as of 1911 and joined the master class of Richard Müller and Otto Gußmann after he had served in WWI. In 1919 he founded the design school "Der Weg" (The Path) and examined contemporary tendencies of avant-garde art. Instead of focussing on the studies of nature, he put an emphasis on composition teachings. The school "Weg" became the meeting point for the Dresden avant-garde. With the portrait "Bildnis Herwarth Walden" Kesting honored the publisher of the magazine "Der Sturm". [KP].
