Impressivenightly landscape with a steamboat, landed at a small pier with beacon, emitting thick smoke. A rowing boat on the cockling water in moonshine emphasizes the work's maritime character. The acclaimed Norwegian painter depicts a remarkable landscape in his typical realistic manner and in a fine and warm coloring. Gude, who went to Düsseldorf after he had completed studies in his hometown, became a student of Andreas Achenbach and Joh. Wilh. Schirmer, whom he succeeded at the academy in 1854. After he had been appointed professor for landscape art in Karlsruhe he followed a call to Berlin, where was also offered the post of director of the master studio for landscape painting in 1880. His oeuvre comprises motifs from his Norwegian home, which he was able to capture in an unmatched manner.
