Erste Ausgabe. - "A rare and splendid Hungarian Flora, this is a typical product of the Golden Age of Viennese botany which centred on Jacquin whose style it exemplifies. The text is by Kitaibel; Waldstein provided the financial backing for its publication." - Der Arzt und Botaniker Paul Kitaibel (1757-1817) war unter anderem mit der Leitung des Ofener Botanischen Gartens betraut und wurde zum Professor für Botanik und Chemie an der Universität Pest ernannt. Seine große ungarische Flora basiert auf den naturgeschichtlichen und vor allem botanischen Reisen durch Ungarn, Kroatien und Slavonien, die er 1792 bis zu seinem Tod 1817 tlw. in Begleitung von von Waldstein unternahm. - Die "vorzüglichen Abbildungen" des "Prachtwerks ungarischer Pflanzen" (Nissen S. 186) stammen überwieg von J. Schütz. - Die Dezennien, in denen das Werk ursprünglich herausgegeben wurde, hier durch hs. Tafelverzeichnisse auf blauem Papier unterteilt. - Fehlt in Bd. III die Tafeln 227. Tafeln schmalrandig, überwieg. sauber, Bd. I oben zu Beginn mit Wasserrand, Titel mit gelöschtem Stempel, Titel von Bd. III unten mit ergänztem Abschnitt. Einbde. untersch. beschabt und fleckig (Bd. I stärker).

First edition of the rare Hungarian flora. Here vol. I and III (of 3). With 1 aquatint view in the text and 179 col. copperplates (of 180; 10 doublepage). Contemp. calf and half calf. - Plates cropped close, vol. I with slight waterstaining on the first leaves and title with cancelled stamp, title page of vol. III remargined at the bottom. Bindings somewhat scraped and stained. Overall inside clean copy with beautiful botanical engravings.
