Karl Schmidt-Rottluff must have lived through the years after World War II with a feeling of great relief. The days of constant surveillance were over. He could once more show his talents with great strength and freedom. The strong drawing in our sheet proves that Karl Schmidt-Rottluff had not lost any of his primal creative power. This composition seems more like a painting than a drawing. Karl Schmidt-Rottluff remained true to his own artistic means of creation into his late period of creation like hardly any of his contemporaries of Expressionism.
