"Collection très-estimée" (Querard). - Der französische Naturforscher Guettard (1715-1786) war Konservator am Mineralienkabinett von Louis Philippe I., Duc d’Orléans, dem er das Werk auch widmete. "With a laboratory at his disposal and an assured income, Guettard was free to devote himself entirely to scientific research" (DSB). - Guettard war intensiv an geologischen und mineralogischen Fragen interessiert, so entdeckte er die vulkanische Natur der Region Auvergne, identifizierte Trilobiten in den Schiefern von Anjou und entdeckte französische Vorkommen von Kaolin. Er gilt weiterhin als Pionier der geologischen Kartierung, sein berühmter Atlas minéralogique de la France (1780) war der erste dieser Art. - Das vorliegende Werk beschäftigt sich ausschließlich mit mineralogischen, geologischen und paläontologischen Forschungen, darunter Berichte über seine Entdeckung von Kaolinlagerstätten, Fossilien, Erosionsprozessen in Gebirgen sowie mit Beschreibungen und Klassifkationen verschiedener Korallen, Schwämme und röhrenförmiger Muscheltiere. Nicht weniger als 28 Taxa werden hier erstmals beschrieben (vgl. die AnimalBase-Datenbank der SUB Göttingen). - Vollständiges Exemplar mit allen dazugehörenden Tafeln. Laut Vorwort zum 4. Band sollen in diesem 3 dopp. vorhandene Tafeln ausgelassen werden (Mem. 14, Pl. 11, 12 u. 13), wie in unserem Expl. konsequenterweise geschehen. Das bei BHL (nur Bde. II, IV und V) digitalisierte Expl. enthält noch diese dopp. Tafeln, und vermutlich basiert Pritzels abweichende Angabe von 115 Tafeln für den 4. Bd. auf einem Exemplar mit 2 solchen dopp. Tafeln (wenn er denn richtig gezählt hat). - Ohne die Vortitel zu Bd. I und III. - Vereinz. leicht gebräunt oder gering stockfleckig, 1 Taf. mit Randeinriß. Rücken und Kanten leicht berieben, 2 Bde. etw. bestoßen. Insges. schönes und breitrandiges Exemplar in dekorativen Einbänden der Zeit, in dieser Vollständigkeit sehr selten. Gest. Contemp. calf with 2 red labels and richly gilt spine. - Jean-Étienne Guettard (1715-1786), French geologist and mineralogist who was the first to survey and map the geologic features of France and also the first to recognize the volcanic nature of the Auvergne region of central France. - The "Memoires" are devoted entirely to mineralogical, geological and paleological subjects, with reports concerning Guettards discovery of the French kaolin deposits, weathering of mountains, fossil records, description and classification of several corals, sponges and especially tube-shaped bivalvia. 28 taxa are described here for the first time. - Lacking subtitles of vol. 1 and 3, else complete. Here and there slight browing or minor foxing, 1 plate with marginal tear. Spine and edges slightly rubbed, 2 vols. somewhat bumped. In general fine and broadmargined copy with bookplates of Frederic Cheron and E. Bucaille.
