"Dürer issued three major sheets featuring the Madonna between 1495 and 1498: the engravings 'The Virgin and the Dragonfly', "Madonna with the Monkey", and the woodcut here under discussion . The rabbits, usually a fertility symbol, may serve here merely as staffage. On the right are the symbolic lilies, whereas on the far left, sea holly leaves, denoting love, are placed next to tall grass that in other sheets signifies transience. The sunbathed background is symbolic of the bright new future of the new era." (Bartsch). - Auf grobem, bräunlichem Bütten ohne Wasserzeichen. Umlaufend mit Rand von ca. 3 mm.
