Erste lateinische Ausgabe, zugleich die erste mit den drastischen Kupfern von Theodor de Bry nach Jodocus van Winghe.

This edition is much sought for, in consequence of the beauty of the first impressions of the plates" (Sabin). - "Der spanische Dominikanerpater La Casas lebte zwichen 1502 und 1547 als Missionar überwiegend in Lateinamerika und Mexiko, wo er sich gegenüber der spanischen Kolonialmacht für die Rechte der Indianer einsetzte .. Es enthält landeskundliche Nachrichten über Haiti, Kuba, Nicaragua, Mexiko, Venezuela und Peru, berichtet aber hauptsächlich über die bei Ankunft der Spanier bestehenden indianischen Reiche und die Grausamkeiten der Spanier bei der Zerschlagung" (Griep/Luber zur deutschen Übersetzung).
EINBAND: Lederband der Zeit. 19,5 : 15 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit breiter gestochener Titelbordüre und 16 (statt 17) Textkupfern. - KOLLATION: 4 Bll., 141 S. (fehlen S. 25-32 und S. 141). - ZUSTAND: Tlw. fleckig und gebräunt, einige alte Unterstreichungen, tlw. angefalzt, S. 93/94 mit geklebten Einrissen und im linken Rand geringer Buchstabenverlust, Titel verso sowie 5 Bll. mit Stempel oder handschriftl. Besitzvermerk. Ecken und Rücken bestoßen, 2 Ecken beschädigt. - PROVENIENZ: Privatsammlung Niedersachsen.

First latin edition. With engr. title border and 16 (instead of 17) engr. in text. Contemp. calf. Missing pp. 25-32 and p. 141. Partly stained and browned, some old underlinings, partly remargined, pp. 93/94 with repaired tears and minor loss of letters in the left margin, title verso and 5 leaves with stamp or handwritten ownership note. Corners and spine bumped, 2 corners damaged.
