With the signature paraphe in the lower right. 41.5 x 33.5 cm (16.3 x 13.1 in) [KA].
• Key motif: The hermit embodies the typical Spitzweg character—the quiet, aloof observer caught between humor and melancholy.
• Man as a seeker of spiritual freedom and self-sufficiency as a symbol of romantic introspection.
• Important early work featuring the poetic imagery that made Spitzweg famous.
