Signed and dated on the reverse. Ca. 127 x 92 cm (50 x 36.2 in).

• An early, large “Tactile Object.”
• From the group of the “Material Pictures”, a key part of his artistic development.
• The important documenta painting “Für Berlin” was created that same year.
• Part of a major private collection in Berlin for more than 35 years.
PROVENANCE: Galerie Michael Haas, Berlin (with the label on the reverse of the frame).
Private collection, Berlin (acquired from the above in 1989).
LITERATURE: Erwin Sylvanus, Emil Schumacher, Recklinghausen 1959, p. 29 (illustrated on p. 54).
"I grew interested in color as a substance, as matter, as something tangible. [..] In the pursuit of this new approach, I found my current objects. These forms, made from a wide variety of easily moldable materials, are so closely identified with the matter itself that their expression arises spontaneously. It is not an image of something, but rather through something. [..] I call my objects ‘tactile objects’, since the viewer can explore their nature by touching them, both mentally and physically."
