The last years of Lyonel Feininger's creative life were marked by memories of his long stay in Germany. Old motifs reappeared, often in altered form. But the cityscape of New York, where Feininger lived during the last years of his life, was also incorporated into the artist's themes and integrated in a wonderful way. There is hardly any other life's work in the field of classical modernism that is as cohesive as that of Lyonel Feininger. Thus, "Feel of Morning" also seems to be unlocated, more committed to Feininger's formal canon than to a topographical determination. The sensitive pen-and-ink strokes outline a silhouette of houses, delicate yet determined, and the soft, almost romantic watercolouring gives it an aura of enticing remoteness and distance. Feininger succeeds in transforming real-life worlds into an almost dreamlike atmosphere in which the question of references to the here and now becomes secondary. His impressions are subtle, yet they occupy all the senses, both visually and emotionally. In his landscapes, whether in the vastness of the sea or in the crowded solitude of a Thuringian village, there is often a hint of musicality, an "andante cantabile" that gradually captivates the viewer.
