"Drawing to distraction" was Kirchner's credo, accordingly, a remarkable abundance of a variety of drawings has been preserved. The swift account of a situation, often by overlooking certain deatils, makes for the special charm of the graphic oeuvre of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, which is rightly considered the best one within German Expressionism. The sheet "Unterhaltung im Café" is part of the group of works in which Kirchner examined metropolitan life, one of his most important themes in those days. It is a prime example of a quickly sketched drawing and the artist's striking apprehension.
