Hermann Max Pechstein
In der Etappe (aus der Werkreihe: "Somme-Schlacht"), 1917.
Brush and India ink
Starting bid: € 5,000 / $ 5,800
In der Etappe (aus der Werkreihe: "Somme-Schlacht"). 1917.
Brush and India ink and watercolor.
Bottom center monogrammed (in ligature) and dated as well as inscribed "10." in the right. On brownish wove paper. 44.7 x 32 cm (17.5 x 12.5 in), size of sheet.
The drawing is part of a series of works that Pechstein created in 1917 in memory of the Battle of the Somme in France in 1916. Twenty-five unnumbered drawings from this series are held by the Buchheim Museum in Bernried. In addition, nine drawings numbered by the artist are known to exist. Pechstein used some of the motifs for his 1918 portfolio of prints “Somme 1916,” which was published in Berlin in 1920 as the third work by Gurlitt-Presse. [CH].
• Sheet 10 from the small series of works on the Battle of the Somme.
• In 1915 and 1916, Pechstein completed his military service on the Western Front (Somme/Flanders), fortunately not on the front line, but as a cartographer, among other things.
• Return to artistic productivity: in 1917, the year the drawing was created, the artist found new creative energy and creativity after years of deprivation during the war, producing drawings and graphic cycles based on them.
PROVENANCE: Private collection, Bavaria.
EXHIBITION: Klassische Moderne und ausgewählte alte Kunst, Galerie Ambaum, Cologne, summer of 1976, cat. no. 169 (illustrated).
LITERATURE: Ketterer Kunst, Munich, 14th auction, May 1975, lot 1495 (illustrated, p. 227).
In good condition. The sheet is slightly browned overall. The color is partially faded in places. There is a faint, slightly diagonal crease in the upper half of the sheet and a small crease in the lower right corner. There is a small tear (approx. 3 cm) in the lower edge of the sheet.
