"When I work I act unconsciously.I do not reflect my actions, over days I get completely wrapped up and reach a state that allows me to convey my motivations onto the field by means of nails." (Günther Uecker, quote after: Tagesspiegel, 13 April, 2008, no. 19873, pageS 1). Despite the materials' massiveness, Uecker's creations, owed to the play of light and shade on the rhythmically arranged series of nails, seem agravic. Uecker's nail pictures, which count among the artist's most sought-after works, transfer their brute process of making to beauty. Both in terms of origin and effect, Uecker's powerful poetic creations succeed in expressing obvious contrasts. Action and contemplation, rest and motion merge and form a fascinating artwork of sublime beauty.
