• Baselitz at his best: Monumental reinterpretation of his early romantic work “Zwei Eichen“ (1954) and his first upside down painting "Der Wald auf dem Kopf" (1969).
• Inspired by Romantic painting, the forest is the key motif in his oeuvre, enabling him to devise his characteristic “upside-down” imagery.
• Masterly testimony to Baselitz's exploration of art history and his artistic roots in East Germany, which he left in 1956.
Apotheke - PiN": the essence of Baselitz's epochal creative work.
• Most recently, the Fondation Beyeler, Basel (2019), the Centre Pompidou, Paris (2021/22), and the White Cube, London (2024) honored Baselitz with major retrospective exhibitions
.

We are grateful to the Georg Baselitz Archive, Munich, for its kind support in cataloging this lot. The work is documented in the archive.
