Kopfweiden am Schwarzbach bei Wittlaer. Wohl 1920/30s.
In good condition. With minor craquelé in places. With few tiny colour chippings and retouchings.
Oil on canvas.
49 : 40 cm (19,2 : 15,7 in). The landscape near Wittlaer is characteristic for the work by the painter Max Clarenbach, who received his training at the Düsseldorf Academy, and who developped a love for harbour-, sea- and river views at an early stage. His works, on exhibition at the 1902 German National Art Exhbition in Düsseldorf, show views of Erft in winter. "Der stille Tag" is acquired by the Düsseldorfer Kunstmuseum right away and marks his breakthrough. Clarenbach's Rhine- and Erft landscapes, mainly executed with a strong stroke of brush and a delicate clayey colouring, show the influence of both his teacher Eugène Gustav Dückers and the Hague School.
