Ludwig Valentin Angerer, called Angerer d.Ä [the elder] was regarded - like his brother Angerer d.J. [the younger] as a representative of Magic Realism in which the fictitious and the magical were combined with a romantic image concept. In the fore of his work was the affiliation of painting, architecture and sculpture, in which he orientated himself to role-models like van Gogh, Gauguin, Chagall, but also to Old Masters like Leonardo or Breughel. Especially the paintings of Angerer d. Ä. captivated through a technically virtuoso technique.
Born in 1938 in Bad Reichenhall, Angerer d.Ä. completed his studies of architecture in Munich between 1957 and 1961. Afterwards he attended the Akademie der Bildenden Künste and studied under Professor Ruf until 1966. In 1967 he worked as a design architect and monument conserver with A. v. Branca in Munich. Over the years, he received several prizes for architecture. Since 1975 he worked as a freelance architect and artist, his works have been presented in numerous exhibitions at home and abroad ever since. The versatile Angerer d. Ä. was also put in charge of furnishing various films and dramas beside his work as an illustrator and author. He received for the artistic furnishing of the film Die unendliche Geschichte II' [Never-ending story part II] by Michael Ende the 'Bayrischer Filmpreis'. In 1996 he founded the centre for magic artists together with other artists. One year later the 'Erlöserkapelle', which was designed by him, was built in Biburg, a synthesis of the arts of architecture, painting and sculpting. Angerer d. Ä. lives with his wife on a farm in Holledau.
