The baroque painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo was born in Seville on 1 January, 1618. He was apprenticed early to the painter Juan del Castillo. He is best known for his Roman Catholic religious works. His secular painting - not less significant - predominantly show scenes of poor areas of his home town. In 1662 Murillo finished his last painting "Die Jungfrau mit dem Jesuskind und dem heiligen Johannes". In 1682 fell from the scaffold while working in a church and soon after died as a result of this accident in Seville on 3 April, 1682.
