Publius Flavius Vegetius Renatus, the author of the "Epitomae rei militaris," lived around 390 C.E. This well known essay on military science was dedicated to the ruling emperor. His sources include Cato, Cornelius Celsus, Frontius, Paternus, and the royal writings of the Roman Emperors Augustus, Trajan, and Hadrian. Actually, Renatus was probably a veterinarian. Under that rubric, he composed the work "Artis Mulomedicinae," in which he introduced the term "Thuringian" for a type of thoroughbred horse. With his choice of terms, he is the literary creator of the Germanic tribe of the same name, though the name was only later applied to the tribe. Other veterinarian authors such as Columella, Pelagonius, and Mulomedicina Chironis served as his sources for this work.
