Fritz Genkinger was born in 1934 in Tübingen and grew up in Nürtingen, where he worked as a tool mechanic up. In 1957, he entered the National Academy of Visual Arts in Karlruhe, studying under HAP Grieshaber and Herbert Kitzel. Genkinger first settled as a freelance painter in Karlsruhe, moving to Stuttgart in 1968. In 1970, he began working as a guest lecturer at the National Academy of Visual Arts in Stuttgart. In 1972, Genkinger received a stipend from the Cité Internationale des Arts which enabled him to spend a year in Paris. He rediscovered his love of soccer while searching for his own unmistakable style. He then created his "Fußballbilder" ("Soccer Paintings"), in which form and color tumble about the surface. Genkinger moved to Rielingshausen/Marbach am Neckar in 1974. In the years following, he produced further commissioned and independent works which thematically dealt with sports, especially soccer. Genkinger resettled in Münsingen-Böttingen in 1995. On the occasion of his 70th birthday in 2004, the artist presented new pieces inspired by the layers of the so-called "Böttinger marble."
