Jan Steen was born as the son of a brewer in Leiden (Netherlands) in 1626. The painter studied under Dirck Hals at the University of Leiden in 1646. In Utrecht Steen was N. Kupfer's student. Later he took lessons by A. van Ostede in Haarlem. In 1648 Jan Steen was the co-founder of the Painters Guild St. Lucas in Leiden which he left after his marriage with Jan van Goyen's daughter in order to work in The Hague until 1653. In 1679 he died in Leiden and was burried on February 3rd .
