Maria Sibylla Merian

1647 Frankfurt/Main
1717 Amsterdam

The German painter and entomologist Maria Sibylla Merian lived from 1647 to 1717. She was the youngest child of Mathäus Merian d. Ä. (the Older) and soon learned the different types of graphical drawing. Her book "Neues Blumenbuch" was published in Nuremberg between 1675 and 1680. Maria Sibylla Merian lived in Amsterdam since 1691. Thus, she made contacts to people in Dutch colonies, especially in Surimon. The book "Metamorphosis Surinamensum" was based on studies in Surinam and was translated into Latin and Dutch. Merian's books "Buchillustration" and "Das Raupenbuch" were published several times.
