Maximilianus Transsylvanus
1480 Tras-os-montes
1521 Macten
Maximilianus Transylvanus (also known as Maximilianus of Transylvania and Maximilian von Sevenborgen) was probably born about 1490. Of his education, only that the historian Peter Martyr d'Anghiera was his teacher for a period of time can be confirmed. Transsylvanus published a poem for the Diet in Constance in 1507 and therewith came out as a writer. At this time, he was probably a secretary at the court of Emperor Maximilian I. A collection of poetry, which was dedicated to the Royal Consul and President of Chambers Blasius Hölzel, appeared in 1518, of which he was co-author. After the death of Maximilian I, Transsylvanus continued his service under the next Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V, and accompanied him to the Diet of Worms in 1521 and to Spain a year later. There he wrote a comprehensive report on Magellan's circumnavigation of the earth, basing his report on interviews of the survivors of the journey and thereby composing his most important work. On the the orders of Margaret of Austria and Mary of Hungary, Transsylvanus was sent with the diplomatic mission to the Netherlands in 1523. Maximilianus Transylvanus died 1538 in Brussels.
