Will Faber

1901 Saarbrücken
1987 Ibiza

Will Faber was born on May 25, 1901, in Saarbrücken, Germany. In 1924, Faber began studying painting in Munich but went to Berlin two years later, where he befriended Käthe Kollwitz and Willi Jäckel. At this time, his works had a strong orientation towards Expressionism. Faber left Germany for Barcelona in 1934. Inspired by the Cubists, Futurists, and Dadaists, he began a new phase in his painting while in Spain. Faber blended single letters into his paintings and wove them with calligraphic and pictorial details into a unified whole. Faber was fascinated by space and the cosmos and brought elements of cosmic chaos into his works, creating a chaotic unity. Fleeing from the Spanish Civil War, he went to Ibiza in 1934. After a long career, he died on the island in 1987.
