In 1929 Bruno Voigt began to study with Professor Walter Klemm at the Weimar Art Academy and soon discovered a predilection for drawing urban scenes notable for a harsh, terse handling of line. The contract he had concluded with Bavaria Publishers in Munich in 1932 for cartoons, lithographs and gouaches, was terminated in 1933 because Voigt’s style was regarded as “degenerate”. Voigt’s early work, of which the present watercolour is a prime example, was shaped by his study of Dix, Grosz, Schlichter and Arnold. Bruno Voigt was also an artist who depicted the decadence and insincerity of bourgeois society, with less cynicism than some of his contemporaries yet nonetheless with radical succinctness. [NB]
