Christoph Heinrich Hartknoch. The work, which contributed to his fame to a great extent and is thus to be mentioned in this context, is his Altes und Neues aus Preußen ; which had been released as early as in 1684. It covers the entire history of Prussia before and after the establishment of the Teutonic Order. The writing achieves to comvince as Hartknoch more seriously applies a scientific criticism than his precursors, it dominated Prussian historiography for one and a half centuries" (translation of quote from Wegele). - The two parts cover, among others, ethnology, language, population, religion, legal system, coinage, armament, customs and typical habits as well as a comprehensive city chronicle. - The nice coppers by J. K. Kraus, C. Pietesch and J. J. Vogel show views of Königsberg, Danzig, Elbing, Thorn and Brunswick on plates as well as halfpage views of Memel, Heilsberg, Bartenstein, Insterburg, Riesenburg, Saalfeld, Marienwerder, Frauenburg, Marienburg, Angerburg, Brunsberg, Tapiau et al on plates. Also with 1 doublepage plate with coins, depictions of costumes, 4 zoologic illustrations and numerous engr. portraits. - Somewhat browned in places, 1 text copper on rolled-on paper, 1 portrait copper cut out (along bordering line) and mounted, 2 ll. with mended defective margin, 2 ll. with marginal split, front pastedown with entries and ownership notes. Binding somewhat rubbed, spine with small worming and 1 mended defective spot. All in all well-preserved and clean copy

First edition. With engr. frontispice, engr. title, 2 double-page engr. maps, 16 copperplates (1 double-page) and 83 engravings in text (4 fullpage. Contemp. calf. - Here and there brownstained, 1 engraving on mounted paper, 1 portrait cropped close and mounted, 2 leaves with rebacked marginal cutout, 2 leaves with marginal tear, entries and owners inscriptions on pastedowns. Binding slightly rubbed, spine with small wormtraces and 1 repaired defective spot. Altogether well preserved and clean copy.
