PROVENANCE: Private collection Southern Germany.

The garden in summer of his farm house on Chiemsee, where the artist and his wife lived, and its opulent flowerbeds are Arnold Balwé’s domestic source of motifs. Comparable with Emil Nolde, who has a more empathic approach to his depictions of flowers, Balwé dedicated an unusual large amount of compositions to his exuberantly blooming garden. The dominating element in Balwé’s garden pictures is the lust for the motif and the colorful variety of impressions. Balwé does not subdue nature to a particular compositional scheme; on contrary, his interest is solely on the rampant and wild blaze of color of his flowerbeds in summer. He paints swiftly and thus creates a fresh impression that captivates the observer. Without belonging to a particular artistic school Arnold Balwé attains his very own style of interpretation, which stages what he sees free from any -isms. [KD].
