Hans Andersen Brendekilde only turned to painting after he had studied sculpting at the art academy in Copenhagen from 1877 to 1881. Most his early works show scenes of rural life or romantic landscapes. For his balanced compositions Brendekilde used soft and harmonious colors.
"Der angelnde Junge" (Fishing Boy) is an early work by Brendekilde, superbly characterizing his delicate style from the early years. All in peace and undisturbed the boy is fishing from his boat in a calm canal. His sailor suit hints at his wealthy family background, his activity is more a pastime than a actual fishing. With their green and yellow crowns the trees lining the banks form a sheltering roof with just a few spots opening to the sky.
As one of the few Danish artists Brendekilde increasingly turned to social-realist genre painting, which followed French Realism. Along with a new and socio-critical choice of motifs, which illustrates the hard peasant life which was full of deprivation in an unadorned manner, Brendekilde‘s style became harder and rougher. In 1889 and 1893 his paintings were awarded on the World [CB].
