"Schoolcrafts work was intended to be a great encyclopedia of information relating to the American Aborigines" (Field).

Leicht verkleinerter Neudruck der Ausgabe 1851ff. mit verkürztem Titel und vollständig in 5 Bänden. - "The work contains a vast mass of valuable material. It has indeed performed a very important service for Indian history, in collecting and preserving an immense amount of historic data. Vocabularies of Indian languages, grammatical analyses, legends of various tribes, biographies of chiefs and warriors, narratives of captivities, histories of Indian wars, emigrations and theories of their origin, are all related and blended. A very large number of beautiful steel engravings, representative of some phase of Indian life and customs, are contained in the work" (Field in Sabin).

EINBAND: Rote Orig.-Halbmaroquinbände mit figürlicher Rückenvergoldung und Goldschnitt. 28,5 : 20,5 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit 5 gestochenen Titeln mit Vignette und zahlr. Tafeln und Karten (tlw. gefalt.) in tls. getönter Lithographie und Stahlstich. - ZUSTAND: Bände IV und V in den Rändern gebräunt. Einbände leicht berieben, Rücken etw. verfärbt, 1 Einband mit Schabspuren an den Außengelenken.

Small paper reprint of the editioon from 1851 et seq. with shortened title and complete in 5 volumes. With 5 engr. titles with vignette and numerous plates (some folding) in partly tinted lithograph and steel-engraving. Red orig. half morocco bindings with gilt decoration on spine and gilt edges. - Vols. IV and V tanned in margins. Bindings slightly rubbed and spines slightly discolored, 1 volume with some scrapemarks to hinges.
